ALWAYS

It's been so long,
So many years have passed us by,
But to some it feels just like yesterday.
I suppose the memories don't fade,
Fighting an ongoing war,
Watching the person next to you fall dead,
Being forced to give away what little hope of peace they had,
But in turn, they gave it to us.
They gave us the gift of a future without a power-lust such as then,
Without war so fierce we wouldn't know what to think.
They went to battle because they believed,
They believed we could win,
And we did.

They were the heroes of their time,
Guns as ablaze as their hearts.
They lost so much to give us today,
I honor them by always living as if there will be no tomorrow,
I live because for every yesterday there is tomorrow.
I live for the present, the past and the future,
Because they're all connected,
Because their loss in a battle of the past was ours to gain in the future.
Sometimes I wonder where the lost soldiers are,
Sometimes I imagine them stood next to me,
Sometimes I see them in my mind’s eye,
Marching on to another battle.

I sometimes see myself marching alongside them,
Heads held high with a glimmer in my eye.
It's never too late to rectify our mistakes,
Just don't wait too long,
Take action just as our comrades did in the World Wars,
Believe things will change.
Always believe.

And maybe one day,
We’ll see our friends again,
Reunited as if the past was only a memory.
I suppose it is, isn't it?
Only a memory.
A memory always remembered, never forgotten.
Always.
